  • SOA Characterization with TestSetSOA

This demo illustrates how characteristics of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) could be measured employing TestSetSOA cosimulation galaxy. This module allows to measure Gain and Noise Figure dependences on either power of the input optical signal, or its frequency, or injection current. All characteristics as well as modulating electrical and input or output optical signals can be visualized and/or saved to file.

  • Semiconductor Optical Amplifier with Measured Carrier-Dependent Gain Spectra

This demo illustrates the usage of measured gain spectra with PhotonicsTLM module for accurate modeling of semiconductor optical amplifiers. Such gain spectra should be provided for several carrier densities, written as subesctions into the single file. Gain spectra for all intermediate carrier densities will be automatically reconstructed (using a linear interpolation) from the loaded data.

  • Soliton Transmission using a Near-Soliton Source

A grating-controlled mode-locked laser generates near solitons. These have some negative chirp (blue to red). The chirp allows pulse compression in a DCF fiber to give 20-ps FWHM pulses. Unfortunately, these have a slow trailing edge. The compressed pulses are amplified to 56 mW peak, then propagate along a fiber path.

Shows simulation of gain saturation in tapered and non-tapered SOAs.

  • Widely Tunable Hybrid III-V / Si Laser

This demo shows an example of a widely tunable hybrid semiconductor-silicon (III-V/Si) laser. The laser consists of an InP based amplification section, tapers for the modal transfer between III-V and Si waveguides, two ring resonators (RRs) linked with directional couplers for single mode selection, and metal heaters on top of the rings for the thermal wavelength tuning. This setup is similar to that reported in [1], with the advantage that usage of couplers instead of Bragg gratings allows to simplify the design and mitigate tolerances. The slight difference between FSRs of the used RRs allows taking advantage of the Vernier effect for the wavelength tuning.
