  • 80 Channel Analog CATV System
    6 MHz NTSC channel spacing

Investigates the CNR, CSO,CTB performance of a 80-channel NTSC analog system for random carrier phase as a function of RF drive level. Evaluates System Noise Figure in presence of optical amplifier.

  • Fiber CSO Distortion in a 1550 nm NTSC System and
Improvement with Post Fiber Dispersion Compensation

Demonstrates the poor CSO distortion performance of a directly modulated laser cable access system operating at 1550 nm due to laser chirp interacting with fiber dispersion. Also shows how a post-dispersion compensating fiber will fully compensate for laser chirp CSO degradation.

  • Millimeter-wave Fiber Radio Communication System

Demonstrates the generation of two optical carriers sparated by 32.76 GHz. One optical carrier is modulated by 10 analog sub-carriers and the composite signal is transmitted over an optical fiber. After photodetection the sub-carrier signal is transmitted as a millimeter wave signal suitable for cellular radio

  • Finding the 3rd-Order Intercept

This schematic tests the nonlinearity of a photonic link with a MZI modulator using two tones. The output of the link is analyzed for the power in one of the tones, the power in the upper and lower intermodulation produces, and the noise power falling within a defined bandwidth. These are plotted against the electrical modulation signal's power.

  • Microwave Photonics - Distortion vs. Length

The simplest of microwave photonic transmission systems, using ideal components except for the fiber. It includes instrumentation to allow fiber distortion versus length to be plotted as an XY graph.

  • Optical Feedforward Linearizer

This circuit implements photonic feedforward linearization. The optical output of the first-stage modulator is detected and compared with the drive signal. The electrical error signal is added to a bias and drives a second optical modulator, which modulates the power of a second laser, to give an optical correction signal. The main signal and optical correction signal are added together in an optical coupler to give the output signal.

  • Push-Pull Analog Transmission

The schematic shows a system using electro-absorption modulators (EAMs) to modulate an RF carrier and its complement onto two fiber paths. The EAMs can be set to have any non-linear characteristic, either by specifying a polynomial, or by using a file input. The chirp characteristics can also be specified, as these will have an important impact on the frequency response and the distortion if dispersive fibers are added to the link.

  • Radio over Fiber for Antenna Remoting

Radio over fiber offers the ability to upgrade a network (to a different wireless standard, for example) without changing the base stations (no truck roll). The basestations are fed from a Central Office, and contain no-format dependent electronics (just amplifiers). This example shows the HD performance of a base-station using an Electro-Absorption modulator.
