Coupled-Resonator-Induced Transparency (CRIT)

  • Description

    In this example, we consider a system that is formed by two coupled silicon ring resonators with 10 µm diameter each (Figure 1). It exhibits coupled-resonator-induced transparency (CRIT), that is, an all-optical effect analogue to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) [1,2]. CRIT devices provide an efficiently tunable "transparency on an optical chip", which is considered to be a crucial step towards the development of integrated all-optical devices [3].

  • Typical Results

    At the 'through' port, the spectrum presents a narrow transparency peak at the center of a broader resonant reflection; the complementary effect is observed at the spectrum in the 'drop' port. The performance of the CRIT can be evaluated by modifying the internal characteristics such as the attenuation in the rings (Figure 2), which modifies the intensity of the peak; the detuning of the diameter of the rings, which will control the width of the resonance peak (Figure 3); or the separation between the rings (Figure 4).
