Integration of FTTH and WiMAX Services in Broadband Access Network

  • Description

The deployment of wireless systems, such as 3G mobile phone and wireless LAN services, and the increase of FTTH network subscribers drives future broadband access networks to accommodate both fixed and mobile services. In this example, we show the integration of Fiber-To-The-Home supporting digital data and analog video services, and a mobile WiMAX Radio-over-Fiber access network.

  • Typical Results

The setup of the simulated network is displayed in Figure 1. At the OLT, the RF signal is composed of a set of digital channels, 77 analog CATV carriers and a WiMAX transmitter. All services are transmitted over a common optical fiber link. Figure 2 shows the spectra of the transmitted and received electrical signals.
The distribution of the signal is realized by a 1:8 power splitter. Following it, a power attenuator is used to simulate a second splitting stage. Several characteristics of the detected signal can be analyzed. For example, the curves in Figure 3 show the Symbol Error Rate (SER) of Channel 1 and Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) of Channel 2 as functions of the number of users for several amplification values. It can be observed how an increasing number of users would require extra amplification to maintain the system performance.
