VPIlinkConfigurator™ – New version 4.5 released!

VPIphotonics announces the release of VPIlinkConfigurator Version 4.5, a versatile software tool for optical network engineering including automatic equipment placement and configuration and a thorough system-wide performance assessment. It supports equipment configuration and detailed performance calculation of complex networks including ROADMs and true ring topologies. A powerful API enables interfacing with third-party software such as common office applications and databases in addition to custom applications

Version 4.5 improves the network design workflow and provides new functionality that supports unidirectional lightpaths, and Free Space Optical (FSO) channels. The enhancements of Version 4.5 simplify the handling of resource-demanding tasks such as large scale network designs that utilize flexgrid and multi-band DWDM transmission technologies. A new built-in functionality accelerates the design process and supports for the interoperability with VPItransmissionMaker for more detailed analysis of quality of DWDM transmission line.

Among the new modeling features of version 4.5 are

  • New equipment templates to design an FSO channel, e.g., optical link between a ground station and a satellite or inter-satellite optical link and assess the performance of the FSO link in terms of power budget.

  •

FSO Link Budget
Free Space Optics Link Budget

  • New FSO Channel component to model a fiberless communication medium

  • New components to model amplification on the transmitter and receiver sides of an FSO channel

  • Support for specification of gain and loss values in FSO channel including free space propagation loss and weather defined loss

  • Support for calculation of gain and loss values via physical parameters of optical equipment and FSO links, including altitude, elevation angle and weather conditions

  • Accounting for different types of precipitation

  • Application example of configuration and performance assessment of an FSO channel

  • Application example of design and performance assessment of a hybrid optical network including different FSO links and terrestrial links

  • Support for unidirectional channels

Among the new Design Automation features of version 4.5 are

  • Enhanced Channel Assignment Table to simplify channel editing

  • Enhanced Segments Editor to insert multiple regeneration points

  • Enhanced Interactive view to simplify editing link and facility parameters

  • Enhanced simulation engine to optimize memory usage and speed

  • Embeddable Python 3.12.6 to replace Sax Basic Engine

  • Standard Python console for easy trial of API methods and properties

  •

  • Enhanced Configure Transmission Media tool to select automatically the type of a link

  • Enhanced Setup Node Equipment tool to allocate automatically add/drop equipment with respect to an application type of a link

  • A new tool to quickly finalize configuration of all FSO channels in a network through adding transmitting and receiving telescopes

  • A new tool to export transmission line data for further detailed simulations in VPItransmissionMaker
