Computer-Aided Design of Integrated Photonics and Optoelectronics Circuits

Rapidly growing complexity of applications based on integrated photonics and optoelectronics circuits requires specific design and simulation solutions. This becomes especially relevant for large-scale hybrid integrated photonics, which combines solutions for silicon, silicon nitride, and polymer photonics in combination with III-V active optoelectronic devices on one optical chip.
The presenter will consider several practical examples of hybrid PICs and discuss associated design challenges and software approaches to their solution. It will be shown that accurate and scalable circuit-level modeling of large-scale photonic integrated circuits requires a combination of several frequency- and time-domain simulation techniques within the same circuit simulation.

Designers that use LIGENTEC All-Nitride (AN) technology will now benefit from a workflow that starts from a graphical photonic inte-grated circuit design and system simulation environment, which seamlessly couples to layout design tools for scripted layout design and DRC capabilities. The new workflow is based on LIGENTEC and VLC Photonics verified reference designs with the simulation software by VPIphotonics using verified measurements of fabricated chips.

This workflow is enabled by the new VPItoolkit PDK LIGENTEC a pluggable toolkit extension to VPIcomponentMaker Photonic Circuits by adding the support of the 800 nm Silicon Nitride process "AN800" offered by LIGENTEC for dedicated shuttle runs and Multi-Project Wafer (MPW) runs.

VPI Design Suite integrated with Tanner L-Edit Photonics and Tanner S-Edit dramatically enhances both layout- and schematic-driven flows.
The automated link between VPI Design Suite and Tanner L-Edit Photonics provides a convenient way of simulating a designed circuit layout, while the link between VPI Design Suite and Tanner S-Edit provides the designer with an electronic/photonic design automation (EPDA) environment. This allows for simulation and optimization of the integrated circuits comprising both electrical and photonic sub-circuits.

New open position

January 2019


A three-year research training position is open at VPIphotonics in Berlin, Germany as part of the European Training Network WON (Wideband Optical Networks, H2020-MSCA-ETN). The researcher will be trained by the members of the WON consortium, and is motivated to pursue a Ph.D. on a topic related to the efficient modelling of high-capacity wideband transmission systems.
